Now, doesn’t this look lovely?! Just what you’d like to tuck in to on a cold, winter night. Well, that’s exactly what I did first week back at work. I’d been clearing out my kitchen cupboards over the Christmas break. I wanted to get rid of the slow cooker and make some space. Mark said I ought to try using it more often so I didn’t have to cook in the evening. On pinterest I found an American blogger who froze bags of food, ready to defrost and chuck in the slow cooker and off you go. More details can be found here:
This looked exactly what I wanted so I gave it a go. While I was doing my usual weekend prep of sunday dinner, soup for the week and stock, I made up a couple of batches of beef stew. Come wednesday night, I took the bag out of the freezer ready to chuck in first thing on thursday.
Arrived home from work thursday night to a delicious smell wafting through the house and eagerly dished up our dinner…..
It wasn’t great. In fact it was very disappointing. The meat was tough and chewy. I didn’t think that was possible in a slow cooker, but seemingly so. The carrots seemed to be tough on the outside and then watery inside. It just wasn’t very nice at all. Specially when compare to my usual lovely stews & casseroles cooked in the oven.
If that had been the end of it then I would have been happy. Unfortunately we both had terrible upset stomachs the next day too. Terrible. Not good when you’ve got to go to work. And doubly not good when are you supposed to be driving to London to the New Year Sales Meeting which I also missed last year!! Needless to say, that didn’t happen and I already have a black mark against me for this year… :S
