Finally! Finally Chippenham has an Italian restaurant again. It’s been a long time coming since Nico’s Restaurant closed 10(?) or so years ago. And better still, it’s just up the road from our house 🙂
On Wednesday we went along to try out the food and see what had changed since the Brasserie closed. The restaurant had only been open for a week and a half and the place was packed! We hadn’t booked so we weren’t sure whether we’d get a table at all but one was quickly cleared and we were given our menus.
The menu was extensive – starters, pasta, pizzas, chicken dishes, steaks, veal & side dishes. So there was plenty to choose from. Mark ordered a bottle of Prosecco! This wasn’t as outlandish as it sounds as the price was comparable with the other wine on the menu so not overly expensive.
For starters I had crispy squid and Mark had the Antipasto Misto. My squid was lovely and light and came with a large salad. Mark’s plate was huge and contained a mix of cured meats, cheese, olives & artichoke hearts. There was also a little dish of bread & butter for us to share. Good start.
For our main courses I had a veal dish which was served with Parma ham and a creamy sauce. It also had a side of char-grilled peppers & courgettes which was a bit odd. And they were huge pieces as well so looked a bit weird. I didn’t eat those but the veal was lush. Mark had Tagliatelle Arrabiata which was a very big portion again but very tasty.
Undeterred, we moved on to the pudding menu 🙂 I had profiteroles. No explanation required but they were beautiful. Mark had Tiramisu which was gorgeous.
To round off a terrific meal we each had a liqueur coffee. I had Irish and Mark had Italian. It was a very, very nice experience and we will definitely be going to back again to sample some of the other dishes.
