At the weekend we watched Rogue Trader. Having recently watched The Wolf of Wall Street (which I really, really hated) I wasn’t really looking forward to it. I thought it was going to be much of the same. However, I was pleasantly surprised. I like Ewan McGregor anyway so that helped but it was an interesting story. Obviously most people know about the collapse of Barings Bank and that Nick Leeson was held responsible. But this explains more in detail. It’s only one side of the story of course but you couldn’t help but feel a bit sorry for Leeson in the end. Presumably that’s what he wanted when he wrote the book upon which the film is based so you take it with a pinch of salt. But it’s a very watchable film. Well worth seeing if you haven’t already.
So, let’s kick off this update with the trusty films….
We’d hit a bit of stumbling block on the films as we’d had Breakfast on Pluto on the side for ages before we got around to watching it. (Excellent film, would highly recommend. Cillian Murphy is unforgettable and who wouldn’t want to see Brendan Gleeson dressed as a womble?) So we waited quite a while for the next film on my list to turn up. Blow Dry was the selection. The blurb sounded promising; a good cast, set in Yorkshire, about a hair dressing competition… Ok, so in truth the cast list sold it to me. We had Alan Rickman, Natasha Richardson, Bill Nighy and Josh Hartnett to name but a few. Alan Rickman played a super hairstylist turned sour by his wife (Richardson) running off with another woman. His son (Hartnett) wants them all to enter the World Hairdressing Championships but Rickman refuses to help even though his arch enermy (Nighy) is trying to cheat his way to the win.
The story is so predictable that Mark fell asleep and could have a pretty good stab at the ending. There were a few comedic moments but over all it was pretty poor. If you haven’t seen it, save yourself the bother.
